I work primarily in black and white, taking images of natural subjects depicted in natural light. To my eyes, these methods reveal subtle details and aspects of shape and texture that are frequently obscured by color. ❖ The images in the Botanicals series are drawn from a larger project that I have been working on for several years. Like many other photographers I find flowers and leaves a continual inspiration: the blossom of the most pestilent weed is a small and amazing wonder, being nothing less than little bits of stardust held together with sunlight and DNA. ❖ The Leaves series is another long term project I've been working on for several years, documenting the slow degradation of fallen leaves from Red Alder, Salal, and Holly. In the process of its individual deterioration each leaf develops, an amazing amount of character. I find that close examination of each leaf is liking looking at the collection of laugh lines, freckles, and scars in a person's weathered face. There is also a certain delicate tension in the arched and twisted curves produced as the leaves dry and decompose. ❖ Finally, one cannot help but be fascinated by the tiny details that lurk beneath the surface. The closeup series of images were done just for fun, but frequently reveal abstract and formalistic qualities that give new meaning to each subject. ❖ ∂tr.
